About BMRS

Bantry Marine Research Station Ltd. (BMRS) is a privately owned marine biotechnology company based on the shores of Bantry Bay, Co. Cork. With over 20 years of experience, BMRS is a leading provider of marine research and aquaculture innovation.

BMRS operates advanced land-based and offshore cultivation systems for macroalgae, working with species including Alaria esculenta, Saccharina latissima, Laminaria digitata, and Asparagopsis armata. The company supplies seeded string to Irish seaweed farmers and biomass for research and commercial applications, while expanding cultivation activities to include Porphyra spp. and Ulva lactuca.

BMRS also collaborates on national and EU-funded projects focused on sustainable aquaculture, seaweed cultivation, processing technologies, Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), and innovative marine biotechnology applications.

The Role

BMRS is seeking a motivated and practical Seaweed Technician Intern to support the operation, maintenance and development of commercial seaweed cultivation systems and associated infrastructure.

The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience working within a marine aquaculture environment and contribute to activities across DEMO and large-scale cultivation facilities, offshore operations, equipment maintenance and technical development.

Who Can Apply

This internship is particularly suited to students, recent graduates and early-career professionals with a background in electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental or related disciplines who are interested in applying their technical skills within the marine and aquaculture sector.

The role will involve working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary international team. Full training will be provided.

This is an unpaid internship. BMRS welcomes students and recent graduates seeking to undertake an Erasmus+ traineeship in Ireland. Candidates interested in an Erasmus+ placement are encouraged to discuss the internship and available funding arrangements with their home university or institution.

Qualifications & Knowledge

The ideal candidate will have, or be currently pursuing, a qualification in:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • Or another relevant engineering or technical discipline

Candidates should possess:

  • Good practical and problem-solving skills
  • An interest in marine systems, aquaculture and sustainable technology
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Basic written and spoken English
  • A willingness to learn and work as part of a team
  • An ability to work in a practical, hands-on environment

Experience with mechanical, electrical, fabrication, construction, pumps, piping, instrumentation or maintenance systems would be advantageous but is not essential.
