Biorefine Cluster Conference

The first edition of the Biorefine Conference 'The role of biorefineries in European agriculture', took place on 30 and 31 May in Ghent, Belgium. The Conference is aimed at highlighting the current research innovations in the six main Biorefine's domains related to the sustainable resource management in the framework of circular economy systems. At this conference Bantry Marine Research Station Ltd. was represented by Dr. Julie Maguire and Priya Pollard. Julie Maguire Phd delivered a presentation on "Value chains for European seaweed" under plenary session Value chain assessment of waste-to-bioenergy and bioproducts solutions.

Priya Pollard PhD Student was also in attendance and presented a poster entitled " Ensiling kelps for downstream biochemical extraction". Priya is part of the Agrefine project and investigates a novel seaweed-ensiling process as an alternative to drying to preserve the nutritional and monetary value of seaweed. This research fits into a novel biorefinery centred on a circular economy as it address the shortcomings and overcome the weaknesses that current stand-alone AD and biorefinery technologies possess.
